The accounts of 16 followers and allies of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have been suspended by Twitter and Facebook after the Supreme Court ordered their blockade as part of an investigation into an alleged disinformation campaign .

Tensions are growing between the far-right leader and the high court, which is investigating allegations that several members of Bolsonaro's circle are leading a campaign on social networks to discredit the Supreme Court and defame and threaten its judges .

Supreme Court member Alexandre de Moraes said in his verdict, which confirmed a ruling issued in May, that the accounts of those users should be blocked to stop "the current spread of false news, defamatory charges, threats and crimes " against the court.

Among the suspended accounts are those of former Conservative MP Roberto Jefferson , business magnate Luciano Hang and far-right activist Sara Winter .

Blocking their accounts on Twitter and Facebook is applied to users who visit them from Brazil.

American social networks are under increasing pressure to remove hate speech and false information from their platforms.

Twitter even went so far as to recently tag tweets from US President Donald Trump as misleading and promoters of violence.

For its part, Facebook suffers a boycott of advertisers for not doing enough to stop hate messages.
