The government of Poland's ultra-conservative Union and Justice Party (PiS) has announced its intention to revoke the so-called Istanbul Convention against violence against women.

The country's executive has reported that it is preparing the steps to carry it out, since it considers that it intervenes in the parents' rights, since, according to what they maintain, said agreement instructs children on gender.

This was stated by the Polish Minister of Justice, Zbigniew Ziobro , in a press conference, detailing that this Monday he will send the request to the Minister of Family to begin the withdrawal process.

The protests were not long in coming. They were called by various feminist organizations under the motto "No to the legalization of domestic violence". Several hundred women gathered in the center of Warsaw, some of them dressed as characters from the series The Tale of the Maid .

Activist Joanna Gzyra , from the Center for Women's Rights , appealed for help to the European institutions before the protests started, in statements collected by the Polish digital Onet .

In addition, she expressed the hope that a large mobilization could block the government's plans, as occurred when the so-called "Women's Strike" forced the ultra-conservative executive to renounce the reform of the abortion law.

This week, Vice Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski , has already announced that the revocation of the signing of the Istanbul Convention, which is binding and that considers all forms of violence against women as a crime, is among the plans of the PiS government.

"At the Ministry of Justice we have long believed that this agreement is totally unacceptable, not only from an ideological point of view but also - and perhaps above all - from a legal point of view," Romanowski told the station. Radio Maryja.

The vice minister indicated that although the agreement refers "formally" to "very important" issues such as the prevention of violence, these are exploited by "neo-Marxists and followers of gender ideology", so the treaty should be abandoned "as soon as possible".

The Government further argues that the agreement is written in "ambiguous" language and that it violates the right of parents to educate their children according to their values.

The ultra-conservative organization Ordo Iuris, known for bringing LGBTI rights activists and artists considered blasphemous to justice, began a campaign to collect signatures in favor of abandoning the agreement this month, with the slogan "yes to the family, no to gender "

Poland signed the treaty for the prevention of violence against women in 2012 and ratified it in 2015, the year the PiS came to power.
