An Egyptian army spokesman released a false picture of what he said was training the Egyptian navy in the Mediterranean with the participation of the French navy.

Al-Jazeera Live's verification unit revealed that the image was first published on the US Navy website and concerned joint naval exercises in the Mediterranean in September 2013.

Two weeks ago, the Egyptian military spokesman published photos of the military exercises he said were in the western region, and upon verification they were found to be old, too.

The spokesman said today that the Egyptian and French naval forces carried out "a maritime transit training in the northern fleet in the Mediterranean, with the participation of the Egyptian ghostly frigate (Long live Egypt) with the French ghost frigate (Acne)."

He added that the training focuses on "methods of organizing cooperation in the implementation of combat missions in the sea against hostile marine formations with the actual use of weapons in engagement with surface and air targets in addition to the implementation of confrontational battles, with the use of Al-Hill seaborne aircraft."
