It was on Tuesday that customs checked two trucks that arrived in Verkö with the ferry from Poland. Customs officers found ten puppies in the trucks. The two truck drivers were arrested and later arrested on suspicion of aggravated smuggling.

On Friday, the detainees are requested at Blekinge District Court. The men are requested to be detained for probable cause, which is the higher degree of suspicion.

- I will request two weeks of detention with restrictions. Partly because of the danger of escape, partly because the suspects can affect the evidence if they are not arrested, prosecutor Love Lundin says.

The accusations concern gross smuggling because there were so many puppies.

Both men deny

According to the prosecutor, the men, 44 and 37 years old, deny the accusations. As the investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor does not want to go into further details.

- We are at a very early stage of investigation and much is covered by secrecy. But what I can say is that we are investigating where the dogs would be delivered, says Love Lundin.

The arrest hearings will be held at 11 and 14 on Friday.

The puppies were killed immediately

The puppies were killed on the spot by the Agriculture Veterinarian. Killing animals that are smuggled in is the Swedish Board of Agriculture's last measure, but was done because the puppies were in such poor condition.
