Twelve migrants who were trying to cross the Channel were rescued Thursday morning on the beach of Cayeux-sur-Mer, in the Bay of Somme, where attempts of this type are quite rare, we learned from concordant sources.

No sea research undertaken

According to the gendarmerie, their boat "from the first wave" was brought back to the beach from which they had left and search patrols were launched to find other migrants participating in this crossing attempt who would have "fled " down. The maritime prefecture confirmed to AFP that no search operation at sea has been undertaken.

From a source close to the emergency services, the twelve migrants, whose nationality was not known, were transported to Abbeville hospital, one of them in hypothermia.

Rather rare attempts

The gendarmerie also indicated that attempts to cross the Channel from the Bay of Somme were "quite rare", given the significant distance to the English coast, but that the consequent surveillance system on the coast of Pas-de -Calais et du Nord could lead to attempts further south.
