Both US President Donald Trump and Russian Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of international stability, especially limiting the proliferation of weapons and avoiding a costly arms race between the two countries as well as China.

In a statement, the Kremlin said that a phone conversation between the two presidents dealt with Iran's nuclear file and issues of strategic stability.

The Kremlin added that Putin and Trump stressed the need for joint efforts to maintain regional stability and the non-proliferation regime in the world, in addition to the special responsibility of Russia and the United States to maintain international peace and security.

While White House spokesman Jad Dair said that the contact between the two presidents dealt with efforts to combat Corona in light of the reopening of the global economy, and that Trump renewed his hope to avoid a costly three-way arms race between China, Russia and the United States.

A few days ago, the Russian Information Agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying that he did not expect to extend the "New Start" treaty between Russia and the United States, which is related to limiting the spread of nuclear weapons.

Lavrov said the risk of a nuclear confrontation has increased strongly recently, noting that Moscow is ready to discuss limiting new weapons systems with Washington.

The New START treaty is a strategic arms reduction agreement signed in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama and his then Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev, which sets the number of warheads and missiles for the two countries.
