On Wednesday evening Swedish time, the president announced an expansion of the operation "Operation Legend", which was first launched in Kansas earlier this month. The effort means that resources from, among others, the FBI are sent to various parts of the country to curb violence and the unrest that has arisen in connection with demonstrations.

The initiative does not require a formal invitation from the local authorities, and has met with criticism. The presence of federal police in Portland has rather escalated the violence and unrest, according to the city mayor.

200 police to Chicago

But according to Trump, another 200 federal police officers will now be sent to Chicago and about 35 to Albuquerque, New Mexico, writes CNN. The effort would be relevant in more cities, the president added.

- I have no other choice, Trump said during a press conference on Wednesday night.

Democrat Martin Heinrich, a New Mexico senator, wrote in a Twitter post after the announcement that federal police would be sent to Albuquerque, that they were not welcome - especially after the "mess" that arose in Portland.
