American singer Taylor Swift announced on Thursday the surprise release of a new album at midnight (0400 GMT) the same day, titled "folklore", her eighth studio album.

The album will include sixteen tracks, the physical edition "deluxe" (enriched) of the disc including one more, "the lakes", revealed the artist on his Instagram account.

"Most of the things that I had planned this summer did not happen, but there is something that I did not foresee and which has come true", explained the young thirty-something about this new. album.

While Taylor Swift hasn't released any excerpts from the album, it seems to be a less pop-sounding record, judging by her collaboration with folk group Bon Iver, who co-wrote some of the songs and sing along to one of them.

The singer, who broke into country before switching to pop, also worked with Aaron Dessner, co-founder and multi-instrumentalist of indie rock band The National.

Dessner, who premiered folk rock group Big Red Machine in 2016 with Bon Iver founder Justin Vernon, co-wrote or produced 11 of the 16 "folklore" tracks.

Author, Taylor Swift once again wrote or co-wrote all the tracks on the record, as she had done for most of the tracks on her previous albums.

“Before this year, I probably would have thought too much about the + perfect + time to release this music,” the singer explained on Instagram. "But these times remind me all the time that nothing is certain."

"My gut tells me that if you do something you love," she wrote, "you should just offer it to the world."

Taylor Swift's latest album, "Lover", was released in late August 2019.

The singer's last six albums have all peaked in sales in the United States.
