It took two years for investigators to thwart this traffic, which is the cause of the death of dozens of protected birds, mainly parrots, specifies the local daily. French police officers, who worked together with their Swiss counterparts, were able to save the life of a Banks cockatoo from Oceania. The bird had been resold in Switzerland.

Several hundred thousand euros

The traffic involves parrots because these birds are "colorful and very intelligent", indicates Marc Giraud, spokesperson for the association for the protection of wild animals. This market, widespread across Europe, is particularly present in Germany and Belgium, comments the manager.

And this black market is very lucrative. The prices of certain protected species can vary from “several tens of thousands of euros” to “several hundreds of thousands of euros” for certain rarer specimens. This is the case for “Spix's Macaw, a species considered extinct,” underlines Marc Giraud. Interpol estimates that animal trafficking is worth around 23 billion dollars, or just over 19 billion euros worldwide.
