  • Covid-19. Jair Bolsonaro, positive for Covid-19

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, infected with covid-19 for two weeks, was caught this Thursday, skipping some of the basic rules of confinement: riding a motorcycle and without a mask around the Palace of the Alvorada in Brasilia. According to images captured by the Reuters agency, Bolsonaro even stopped to talk to street sweepers who were cleaning the gardens and who were not properly protected either.

Bolsonaro announced that he had been infected with covid-19 on July 7. That same day he assured that he would comply with the quarantine even though it would cost him a lot to "stay still". Since then, he went to work from the official residence, and took the opportunity to campaign for the use of hydroxychloroquine, in videos on his social networks or in direct contact with his supporters, who come to see him every day at the gates of the palace.

Last Sunday, he went out into the gardens and lifted a box of the controversial medicine towards the sky, before the excited applause of dozens of his followers, placed a few meters away, separated by a small pond. Health authorities note that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are ineffective for covid-19 patients and that they can cause serious side effects.

On Tuesday, Bolsonaro underwent a third test and said he expected it to be negative, because he already planned to resume his official agenda this Friday, with a trip to the northeast of the country. It could not be. The test came back positive , so he will have to remain isolated for a few more days.

The motorcycle ride is not the first breach of medical recommendations, but it is the first since he is officially ill. Since the start of the pandemic, Bolsonaro rubbed shoulders with hundreds of people, attended demonstrations in his favor and visited commercial establishments, taking photos and greeting everyone in a friendly way. Opposition parties and social movements defined these attitudes as possible attacks against public health in the 'impeachment' petitions they presented in the National Congress.

Brazil already exceeds 84,000 deaths from coronavirus and has almost 2.3 million confirmed cases, according to official data. The spread of the virus began to decrease in intensity in some states, but in others, especially those in the south, the rate of infection is higher than ever. In the state of Santa Catarina, for example, the number of those infected increased by 131 percent compared to the last two weeks. Most states have long resumed much of economic activity, although the country continues to record an average of more than 1,000 deaths a day.
