A report by the Sydney Police Law Enforcement Conduct Commission collected by the BBC has brought to light a number of cases considered malpractice that took place last year during drug searches.

Most of the searches took place at music festivals and, according to the report, those registered - youth, many minors - felt humiliated and degraded.

After investigating the events, the commission has suspended one of the officers from service and asked the officers to formally apologize to another of the youths.

In all cases, the police actions were investigated after the complaints of the girls' parents were registered or the facts were publicized in local media.

One of the most striking cases took place in January 2019. The police searched two young women outside a Sydney casino . During the search, one of the officers asked one of the girls to remove her tampon. During the search, no illegal substances were found.

In another of the reported performances, a young performer at the Secret Garden festival was ordered to lower her underwear and bow. Meanwhile, according to the report, the police officers - all males - addressed her with laughter and without any professionalism. In addition, a woman who was patted down naked during another festival was forced to squat down and cough.

Are these types of records legal?

Under Australian law, police may only conduct searches of this type if "the severity and urgency of the circumstances" implies that it is reasonable and necessary to do so. They should also perform the least invasive search possible. It is illegal to search genital areas or body cavities.

In the case of minors , a parent or guardian must be present, unless an immediate search is necessary to protect the person or prevent the destruction of evidence.

It is not the first time that Australian police have faced such allegations. Last year, another investigation uncovered the case of a 14-year-old boy who was forced to keep his genitals exposed to police in one of the records at festivals for under-18s that are now under investigation.

An officer assured the commission that these searches were necessary due to concern over drug use and distribution, after several youths died of an overdose.

The Commission has proposed a number of alternatives such as drug testing at such events.
