While the Covid-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is experiencing an increase in police violence in its poor neighborhoods. On average, nearly five people have been killed every day by Brazilian police in the first five months of 2020 - a record that had not been reached for 22 years.

Among the victims of this violence, many innocent people, including children. 75% of them are black, according to a recent study.

Faced with this uncontrolled violence, the Brazilian Supreme Court banned police operations in the favelas of Rio in early June during the pandemic.

Despite criticism, the government of President Jair Bolsonaro recently decided to exclude cases of police violence from its annual report on human rights violations.
