At least 14 people have been shot and wounded in a shooting that occurred during a funeral in the US city of Chicago , local authorities said. The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. local time (23:30 GMT) when several individuals, from a black vehicle, opened fire on those attending the funeral at a funeral home in the south of the city, said a police spokesman, Eric Carter.

Some of those attending the funeral responded with shots fired at the vehicle , which ended up with an accident and its occupants on the run. Carter explained that police detained "a person of interest" who is being questioned.

The police spokesman also detailed that about 60 bullets were recovered at the scene of the shooting . A spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, Larry Langford, said that many of the injured people are in serious condition .

Although authorities did not make public the motive for the shooting, Carter confirmed that a police patrol was destined for the funeral, a common occurrence when the deceased has ties to gangs .

The CBS television network reported that the deceased was a man who was shot in the head and another in the torso last week.

Local media also revealed that police had been warned that an ambush was being planned during the funeral, something Carter did not confirm.

The shooting occurs at a time of tension between local authorities and the Donald Trump government, which has threatened to send federal forces to Chicago and other cities in the United States with mayors of the Democratic Party to contain the violence.

"What about Chicago? Will they need help after this weekend? Do they know the numbers? Have they heard them? Many, many gunshot wounds. Many, many dead. I'm not talking about one, two. Was it 18? I think What else? This is worse than Afghanistan , "Trump said Monday.

According to police data, 11 people died and another 59 were shot and wounded over the weekend .

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot responded Tuesday that "under no circumstances" will she allow Trump to deploy federal agents to Chicago to "terrorize" his citizens.
