The head of the Investigating Court investigating the environmental crime due to the collapse of the Zaldibar landfill has ordered the arrest of the owner of the Zaldibar landfill, Juan Ignacio Barinaga. The Ertzaintza, in addition, has also arrested the managing director Ainhoa Bilbao and Juan Etxebarria, the technical manager of the installation. The Zaldibar catastrophe occurred on February 6 when almost one million cubic meters of rubble dragged Joaquín Beltrán and Alberto Solaluze workers who remain buried.

Two Durango courts are investigating the Zaldibar disaster when a case was opened for the alleged crime against worker safety and another for an alleged environmental crime. The judge who carried out this investigation into the environmental effects of the demolition is the one who has ordered, almost six months after the catastrophe, the arrest of the owner of Verter Recycling and the two highest technical managers of the landfill.

The three detainees would be in Ertzaintza dependencies waiting to testify as defendants before the judge. His appearance is scheduled for next Thursday. Juan Ignacio Barinaga, a native of Eibar, is the businessman who, since 2002, started the landfill on the slopes of Mount Montia within the municipality of Zaldibar and just 500 meters from Ermua. Barinaga, according to the police investigation, refused last February 6 to go to the place of the demolition when an Ertzaintza patrol went to his home to report the tragedy. Subsequently, Verter Recycling participated in the search for the two buried workers. Barinaga has avoided making public statements while the Basque Government assumed both the rescue of the bodies of the buried operators and the stabilization of the collapse of industrial spills.
