The former leftist president was tried in absentia for his participation in a vast network of scams during his tenure (2007-2017). This judgment concerns in particular facts dating from 2012 to 2016 for which the other convicted are ex-ministers, business leaders, a parliamentarian and the former vice-president Jorge Glas, who is serving a six-year prison sentence for having received bribes from the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht.

Correa's party suspended
The case is not completely over, however. The 18 convicted persons still have the possibility of appealing to the Supreme Court.
