Spanish motorcycling champion Marc Marquez underwent successful surgery on Tuesday for his fractured right humerus suffered Sunday during the Spanish Grand Prix and the date of his return to the track remains uncertain.

His Honda team have indicated that the rider will remain for 48 hours under observation at Barcelona hospital after reducing his fracture with placement of a titanium plate. “The radial nerve was not affected,” the same source said on Twitter.

Marc Marquez, 27, six-time world champion and MotoGP title holder, crashed heavily in the final laps of the Grand Prix on the Jerez circuit when he climbed back to 3rd position after a first off the track.

Transported to the circuit infirmary and then to the hospital, the doctors had diagnosed a fracture of the right humerus.

The next Grand Prix, that of Andalusia, is scheduled on the same Jerez circuit next Sunday, with testing to start on Friday. The participation of Marc Marquez is therefore very unlikely and his brother Alex Marquez, who is teaming with him this year, should be the only representative of the official Honda team this weekend.

Two other drivers injured last weekend, Spaniard Alex Rins (Suzuki) and Briton Cal Crutchlow (Honda-LCR) could also be forced to skip this next race.

After the Andalusian GP, the next event on the calendar, which has been turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic, is the Czech Republic GP on August 9.
