Italian disabled cycling champion Alex Zanardi, very seriously injured a month ago, has been transferred to a rehabilitation center, the Siena hospital announced on Tuesday, where he had been treated since his accident.

"After the cessation of the sedation, the normality of the cardio-respiratory and metabolic parameters and the stability of the general clinical conditions and of the neurological picture allowed the transfer of the champion to a specialized center for functional rehabilitation", wrote the hospital of His in a press release.

"He spent more than a month in our hospital, where he underwent three delicate operations. The stabilization of his clinical conditions and vital parameters allowed the reduction and then the suspension of the sedation. He could therefore be transferred to another structure to follow the necessary neurological rehabilitation there ", also declared Valtere Giovannini, director general of the hospital.

Alessandro Zanardi, 53, was severely hit in the head on June 19 in an accident while driving his handcycle. He hit a truck and suffered from multiple fractures in his face.
