The National Police has arrested a 24-year-old man on Calle Goya in Madrid accused of defrauding 100 people from whom he rented tourist apartments in the capital. It is estimated that it has been possible to pocket around 60,000 euros with the deceits. To attract clients, he used false rental agreements using the official logos of the apartment rental companies. Among its victims are young newcomers to Spain and students with few resources.
The investigation began at the beginning of last month after several complaints were filed by individuals scammed in the rental of real estate in the capital. The arrested, contacted the interested parties in a virtual way and after formalizing a contract asked them for an amount of cash in the form of bail. In this contract, the agents verified that it used both false personal data and logos of well-known real estate buying and selling web portals .
The detainee rented the tourist apartments from the booking.com page . Then, he arrived at the property taking photos of the house and from another rental platform promoting the apartment that he rented to several people in a day or two offering very affordable prices.
The victims after coming to the home verified that they had been scammed. After arduous investigations, the agents were able to identify the alleged perpetrator of the events, who had more than 40 records for real estate scams. They were also able to verify that he had deceived a hundred people, obtaining a profit of approximately 60,000 euros . Among its victims were young people from other Autonomous Communities who were preparing to visit Madrid and students with few resources. After locating the perpetrator, he was arrested and placed at the disposal of the judicial authority, although the investigation remains open and the existence of other victims is not ruled out.
Parallel to this investigation and in the Madrid town of Leganés, agents have arrested a woman for committing scams through false apartment rental contracts . She used well-known web pages to advertise the properties and after contacting interested people she completed a contract under a false name. Once signed, she asked them for bail money, obtaining succulent amounts as a benefit. After her location and arrest, contracts were seized in the name of different people, reaching the formalization of up to five different ones in a short period of time. Investigations continue today to find out if more people are harmed.
