A masked man murdered the 20-year-old son of a Hispanic federal judge who sentenced high-profile cases in New Jersey on Sunday and shot her husband, authorities and local press reported Monday.

Last Thursday, Salas was appointed to conduct the class action lawsuit against Deutsche Bank filed by investors who bought the bank's shares between 2017 and 2020, arguing that the institution did not sufficiently monitor clients considered high risk, including the late Jeffrey Epstein , accused of child sex trafficking, who committed suicide in prison a year ago.

The FBI's Newark, NJ, office said it is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon at Judge Esther Salas' home in North Brunswick , New Jersey, just a few miles from New York City .

According to CNN, the judge's son opened the door and was shot in the heart by a masked man, dressed as if he were a FedEx delivery man , who then quickly fled.

The judge was at her home at the time but was not injured in the shooting , according to local press.

Salas, 51, of Cuban descent, was the first Hispanic federal judge in the state of New Jersey, nominated as a district judge in Newark in 2010 by former President Barack Obama .

Her husband Mark Anderl , 63, is a well-known criminal lawyer and is hospitalized in a critical but stable condition, North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack told reporters.

Salas sentenced Teresa Giudice , one of the protagonists of the television series 'Real Housewives of New Jersey', to one year in prison for fraud for 2014 , and her husband, Giuseppe Giudice , to 41 months in prison.

He also sentenced gang leader Farad Roland of the South Side cartel, one of Newark's most violent gangs, to 45 years in prison in 2018 .

"Judge Salas and her family are in our thoughts right now, when they try to assimilate this act without sense. This tragedy is the last reminder that violence from weapons continues to be a crisis in our country and that our work to Ensuring the safety of the community is not over, "New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement.
