The Most Prestigious Individual Award in the World of Football The Golden Ball (Ballon d'Or) will not be awarded this year due to exceptional circumstances caused by a coronavirus pandemic. Award-winning France Football magazine announced its decision on Monday.
The annual Golden Ball was awarded to the best male player in the world for the first time in 1956. This is the first time the prize has not been awarded.
- After careful consideration, we will not award the prize in 2020 because not all conditions are met, said Pascal Ferre, editor-in-chief of France Football.
The coronavirus pandemic has ravaged the football world since March. Ferre argued that two "normal" months, January and February, are not enough to decide to whom the prize will be awarded. According to Ferre, playing without an audience also influenced the decision.
“Nor can we forget that other games are played or will be played under unusual conditions (behind closed doors, with five substitutes and the Champions League being played from the quarterfinals onwards in one-piece matches), Ferre put it in the writing.

In recent years, the Golden Ball award for the best female player and the awards for the best goalkeeper and young player of the year have also been presented at the Golden Ball ceremony, but they will not be awarded this year either.
Last year, Barcelona star Lionel Messi made history by winning the Golden Ball for the sixth time in his career. The award for best female player went to Megan Rapino, who led the US World Cup gold.
France Football said it will hold a poll this year instead of a prize for the best opening line-up of all-time male players.
