The now 29-year-old man went to Syria in 2013. Among other things, he devoted himself to shooting pictures of the Danish politicians Naser Khader and Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the cartoonist Kurt Westergaard and the anti-Islamic debater Lars Hedegaard, an event that was filmed and got spread on the internet.

Delivered to Denmark

After four years in civil war-torn Syria, the man was wounded in a bomb attack. With the help of smugglers, he managed to get to Turkey with his wife and the couple's two children. Once in Turkey, he was arrested and extradited to Denmark two years later.

Arrested for treason

The 29-year-old has previously been suspected of terrorist crimes, but has since June 22 also been arrested for treason, court documents show that Berlingske has read. If treason becomes a charge in the forthcoming main hearing, it is the first time in over 70 years that a person in Denmark is brought to justice for that crime.

New law

Technically, however, this is a new law, as the previous heading was more about treason in favor of another state, which then Danes collaborated with Hitler's Germany during the Nazi occupation. New treason legislation came into force in December 2015 to include jihadists who fought for IS or other extremist groups in Syria.

The man denies all charges.
