Forty-one people died as a result of severe burns, as a fuel tanker truck exploded on a road in northern Colombia.

Police said the explosion occurred as dozens of people approached to steal fuel after the truck capsized on a road between the cities of Barranquilla and Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast.

An official in the Magdalena region told "Agence France Presse" that the death toll had increased over the past days, to 41.

A preliminary count prepared after the accident occurred, which reported 7 dead and 49 wounded, among them critically injured, who were transferred to hospitals in Barranquilla, Santa Marta (north), Valledobar (northeast) and Bogota (center).

Video footage published by the authorities showed dozens of people filling fuel for resale when the truck exploded.
