Guterres said this during a lecture on the memory of Nelson Mandela.

“More than 70% of the world's population lives in conditions of growing inequality in income and wealth. The 26 richest people in the world own as many blessings as half the world's population, ”TASS quotes him.

He also said that developing countries in a pandemic were in an even more vulnerable economic situation than before. The UN Secretary General called for securing debt relief and establishing special drawing rights for these countries.

Guterres said earlier that because of the coronavirus pandemic, the world was facing the deepest global recession since World War II and the most serious drop in revenue since 1870.
