The United States pledged to support the electrical interconnection project between Iraq and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

In a statement, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that representatives of the three parties held a meeting via video calling to discuss the issue.

The joint statement indicated that the project will provide electrical energy to citizens and support economic development in Iraq, especially in the southern governorates.

He added that all parties called for the speedy implementation of the pledges of the international community at the Kuwait Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq in 2018.

The statement stressed that Iraq, the United States and the Gulf states are seeking to enhance economic relations, to become a basis for peace, development and prosperity in the region.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity had entered into an agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council Electric Linkage Authority, on the sidelines of an energy conference in Baghdad last September.

The agreement aims to extend two 300 km of electricity lines to import energy from the Gulf states.

And Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi said last Wednesday that successive governments have spent nearly 62 billion dollars on the electricity sector since 2013, but without providing adequate services due to poor planning and corruption.

Last year, the Iraqi government signed a contract worth about 16 billion dollars with the German company "Siemens" to develop the sector.

And Iraq's production of electricity is 13.5 thousand megawatts, but it needs 24 thousand megawatts, which causes the interruption of power for long hours.

The renewal of the American exemption for Iraq from sanctions against Tehran allowed the continued import of about 1,400 megawatts of electricity and 28 million cubic meters of gas from Iran.
