• Justice. 2014, the key date to know if Juan Carlos I committed a crime
  • The Keys: The opaque businesses that haunt the King Emeritus
  • The letter Corinna affirms that Juan Carlos I claimed the money the year he abdicated

The figure of Juan Carlos I and, as a consequence, the monarchy have become a central element of the political debate. First, because of the information about the business and opaque actions of the man who was head of state for almost four decades. And secondly, because parties like Podemos, a member of the Government, take advantage of the news about the King Emeritus to encourage debate about the "usefulness" of the monarchical institution.

This Friday, however, Don Juan Carlos was met by a tight defense from Felipe González. The former Prime Minister called for "respect for the presumption of innocence" in the case of the supposed hidden fortune of the King Emeritus and warned that the historical dimension of Juan Carlos I and his "fantastic service" for a decade to Spain cannot be forgotten.

González, who defined the relationship between the two as "fluid" -he has been the president with whom Juan Carlos I has gotten along best-, decided that the historical legacy of Juan Carlos I will not "erase these circumstances."

This closed defense of Juan Carlos I, which he carried out during an interview on TVE , contrasts with the distance that his party, the PSOE, and therefore the Government, has placed with respect to the father of the current King. Pedro Sánchez described as "disturbing" and "disturbing" the information in recent weeks about the investigation in Switzerland, and the Executive has been fueling the expectation that Felipe VI will announce more drastic measures against his father.

"A campaign that affects me"

On March 15, the Zarzuela issued a statement in which the King repudiated his father, renounced his inheritance while alive, and withdrew his assignment. Now, the Government encourages it to make more decisions in this direction.

Given this, Felipe González made a fiery defense of Juan Carlos I, who recalled that "he had a constitutional behavior before there was a Constitution", referring to his decisive role in the Transition to lead the country from dictatorship to democracy.

Furthermore, González attributed the investigation into Don Juan Carlos' businesses and the journalistic revelations in the framework of "a campaign that affects me, the '78 regime." Without mentioning it, he referred to Podemos when reflecting that "when someone gives credibility to what a corrupt police officer or such a lady, more closely related to another, says, give it also when he refers to them."

In other words, if Pablo Iglesias gives credibility to the revelations about Juan Carlos I, he must also give it to those in, for example, the Dina case. There is a name that appears in both cases: the former commissioner José Manuel Villarejo.

The accusations of Podemos

Far from making these kinds of reflections, in Podemos they are focused on questioning the role of the monarchy. They have always done it, but now they do it from the heart of the Executive Power: Iglesias is vice president and the formation has four other ministers.

This Friday they did it again. Taking advantage of a management meeting to analyze the electoral debacle suffered in Galicia and the Basque Country, they once again highlighted that the Crown is in "crisis due to the numerous corruption scandals that are appearing", something that, in his opinion, "questions its usefulness "and evidences" the need to make contributions in a proactive way, opening space for debate to move towards a stronger democracy. "

Pablo Casado also expressed himself against this line adopted by Podemos. The PP leader confirmed on Friday his party's support for "the monarchical institution" and "the presumption of innocence and justice." "What I find disturbing and disturbing," he said, paraphrasing Pedro Sánchez, "is what the government is doing."
