Both figures from the Swedish Kennel Club and the Swedish Board of Agriculture show that more people get a dog. The number of registered dog owners in the country was 837 more in April this year, compared to the same period last year.

Helen Wieslander has both dwarf taxa and Irish wolfhounds. She receives several emails and phone calls daily from eager buyers.

- I've never seen anything like it. Spring is always a lot, but there is a lot more now. It's completely crazy and other breeders say the same thing, she says.

Concerns about spontaneous purchases

But Helén Wieslander fears that many may buy spontaneously and have not really thought through what it means to have the dog in the long run.

- There is a risk that the dogs will be relocated when they are one year old when the buyer no longer has the same time or has not solved where the dog should be when they work full time again.

Helen Wieslander has had a kennel for over 30 years.

Rogue breeders take care

But is it the case that as a breeder you take care of and get more puppy litters now that it is easy to sell?

- Not us serious breeders. Our planning is already done for next year and we have rules to follow with the number of litters and how much the bitches may be used.

Helen Wieslander says that some rogue breeders now also charge a lot for puppies when people are willing to pay to get a dog quickly. And there are buyers who are willing to pay a lot.

- I myself have received offers for extra money. Some are even nasty because they think it's their turn. Many are desperate. But if you want, for example, a dachshund that lives for 15 years, you can not be desperate, but then you should stand in line and wait for a serious breeder.
