One person died and four people were injured in connection with the traffic accident at the northern ring / Grisberget.

The driver of the so-called family car violated the duty to give way and was then hit at high speed by a suspected drunk driver without a 30-year-old driving license.

"Absolutely wrong message"

And since the now deceased driver in the family car was not considered attentive enough at the entrance, she was responsible for the traffic accident, according to the investigation.

The Piteå police initially said that the 30-year-old woman was suspected of drunk driving and aggravated illegal driving, but that there would probably be no more criminal classifications.

Thus, the woman would be released from responsibility for the fatal accident, but the reactions to it have been very strong in Piteå and in the whole of Norrbotten.

- If I drive a vehicle at the right speed, sobriety, I often have time to assess the situation and slow down when a vehicle violates the duty to give way. I think that the police's message is completely wrong to the outside world, says one of many who heard about it.

Causing the death of another

But the Piteå police investigators have now discussed the legal issue with prosecutors and come to a different conclusion.

- We have now decided to notify her of the suspicion of causing another person's death in addition to the other two criminal classifications, drunk driving and aggravated illegal driving. Then we will see what the investigation shows, says preliminary investigation leader Ola Lundström.

The 30-year-old woman remains in hospital, but the police have heard her for information while awaiting questioning by a public defender.

- She admits in substance when it comes to driving, but when it comes to causing another person's death, she has not commented, he says.

The car remains

The woman's crash-damaged car is still standing by the side of the road at the northern entrance and many have reacted to it, but this may look like this for several weeks.

- Our technical investigation is complete and it is the owner of the car who is responsible for it. As long as it does not pose a traffic hazard, we will not do anything. But if it lasts long enough, it will probably be a responsibility for the municipality, says Ola Lundström.
