The initiative is called Digital impact north and is a collaboration between Umeå University, Umeå Municipality, Region Västerbotten, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the research institute Rise.

With a grant from the Wallenberg Foundation, Umeå University can now recruit 100 new AI researchers.  

- This creates a platform that provides opportunities for digital development, where you can run projects that may solve the societal challenges we face, says Hans Adolfsson, Rector of Umeå University.

Helena Lindgren, professor of computer science, agrees.

- AI can be used in the school and health care of the future. It is also about democracy. There is a lot of talk now about unreliable news - how can we use AI methods in the media? There are many uses for AI.
