The family of African-American George Floyd, who died on May 25 at the hands of a white police officer, sued the city of Minéapolis and the four agents involved in the incident on Wednesday, seeking to establish a "financially prohibitive" precedent for brutality. Police.

During a press appearance, Ben Crump, one of the family's lawyers, announced the civil lawsuit filed with the Minnesota district court, weeks after Floyd's death unleashed a wave of protests across the country.

"The city of Minneapolis has a history of deliberate indifference policies and procedures when it comes to treating detainees, especially black men," said Crump, accompanied by other family lawyers.

A police transcript released on July 9 revealed that Floyd alerted the agents who participated in the operation of his arrest about 20 times that he could not breathe.

The transcript was the result of the recording on the body camera of Thomas Lane, one of the four police officers accused in the case and whose defense is now trying to file the charges against him, pointing out that the only person responsible for Floyd's death is the main accused, former agent Derek Chauvin.

Until now, the last minutes of Floyd's life were known thanks to the videos recorded by passers-by, but the document provided by Lane shows the scene, which occurred on May 25 in Minneapolis, in an even more dramatic way.

"It was not just Officer Dereck Chauvin's knee on George Floyd's neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, but it was the knee of the entire Minneapolis Police Department on George Floyd's neck that killed him," he stressed. the lawyer, for whom this matter is a reflection of a "public health crisis".

Crump described what happened as an "unprecedented case." "And with this lawsuit we seek to set a precedent to make it financially prohibitive for the police to unfairly kill marginalized people, especially black people, in the future," he added.

On June 3, Minnesota State Attorney General Keith Ellison toughened the charges against Chauvin, including in the case the other three former agents present at the scene.

Ellison charged Chauvin with the charge of second-degree murder, after being charged on May 29 with third-degree murder and reckless manslaughter.

In addition, he filed charges against former police officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane, present during Floyd's arrest, for aiding and abetting the murder.
