The list of safe third countries was just updated by the European Union on Tuesday. However, confusion still reigns over the rules applicable at community level and the continent remains a model of disunity. Explanations.

DECRYPTION

Zizania still reigns over the question of borders in Europe: the European Union has just updated its list of third countries which are safe from a health standpoint, while the coronavirus epidemic is still raging. In reality, however, each European capital continues to apply its own rules. This is the reason why harmony is not yet there on this central question for relations between member countries and the revival of the European economy.

13 countries considered safe

Officially, 13 countries are considered safe. Until Tuesday, there were 15, but Serbia and Montenegro did not pass the second exam. On the other hand, Australia, Morocco and even Algeria are still on the list, while cases of coronavirus have increased in recent days in these countries.

This list drawn up by diplomats in Brussels is therefore viewed with some skepticism in the capitals. Austria and even Belgium have still not reopened their borders to non-Europeans. France, meanwhile, closed its door to the Algerians.

Prohibitions Resurface

At the other end of the spectrum is Croatia, whose territory is open to the whole world if a visitor produces a negative coronavirus test. Athens also plans to resume flights to the United States at the end of July.

In summary, coordination is not there. In Europe's defense, the epidemiological situation is evolving quickly and not necessarily in the right direction. "We are banking on stabilization and we are not there," pleads a diplomat to Europe 1. We are not there so much that even between European countries, we have seen resurface bans in recent days.
