Reduced mobility in society and blood donors who are on summer vacation, these are the reasons for the prevailing anemia at Sahlgrenska. The hospital is now warning of declining blood levels during the summer.

In recent times, the number of blood donors who have come to donate blood has decreased. Blood is a fresh product that only lasts for six weeks, and replenishment is needed continuously.

- A lot of care and treatments must continue as usual despite the coronavirus, says Cecilia Pardi, medically responsible doctor at Transfusion Medicine at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Care needs to be replenished with blood all the time because, among other things, chronically ill adults and children need blood regularly. Blood is also needed for cancer treatments, births and accidents. Blood donors are now encouraged to contact their blood center and make an appointment to donate blood as soon as possible.

Extra protective measures

According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, all blood donors must wait 14 days after being ill with the coronavirus before donating blood. The hospital also urges blood donors not to bring relatives to the blood donation, and to take into account the recommendations of the Public Health Authorities.
