On the farms in Järna, there are now about 30 white small pieces of cotton buried in the ground and waiting for the decomposition process to start. A total of 400 people throughout Sweden are competing to have the most degraded washcloth at the end of August.

It is above all to keep the soil covered with plants all year round and to have a good diversity in cultivation that can be crucial in the championship, says Wijnand Koker, agricultural advisor in Järna.

- One can expect that there is a higher activity in the soil where many different crops are grown. That there is grassland is crucial, he says.

Call for soil health

Behind the championship is the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences 'competence center for advice and the Swedish Farmers' Association. The idea is to make a joint appeal for the importance of healthy arable land in Sweden.
