Local sources in Yemen's Socotra told Al-Jazeera that the Emirati-backed transitional council militants are launching a campaign of arrests and chases of the remaining local officials in Socotra.

The sources added that the transitional gunmen were chasing the director of the Immigration and Passports Department branch in the Governorate of Socotra Archipelago, Lieutenant Ali Salem al-Saqtari to arrest him, and they circulated his name at the military checkpoints.

She stated that they wanted to take the official stamp of the Passport Department, which Socotra refused to hand over to them.

This comes two days after the transitional gunman arrested the director of the Civil Status Office in Socotra, Lt. Saleh Amer.

Arrests and silence

The sources said that the transitional gunmen were waging a campaign of arrests and chases of the remaining local officials in Socotra, amid the silence of the Saudi forces present on the Yemeni island.

A few days ago, he accused the governor of Socotra, the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council, that he was working at the behest of his supporters to bulldoze government institutions in the governorate, excluding legitimate leaders and replacing them with their elements.

Socotra is a Yemeni island with an important strategic location, nicknamed the most strange areas in the world due to its unique biodiversity and environmental importance, and the UAE took control of it in the light of the country's war atmosphere and sent its forces there in the beginning of May 2018.
