The Iranian judiciary spokesman announced on Tuesday the execution of a former compatriot official accused of providing secret intelligence to the US ballistic missile program in Iran. According to the judicial spokesman, Gholamhossein Esmaili , the inmate, identified as Reza Asgari , was executed last week, in statements collected by the Mizan judicial agency. Another sentenced to death on identical charges could be executed shortly.

According to Esmaili, Asgari worked for years in the aerospace department of the Ministry of Defense. He retired four years ago. "Unfortunately, he joined the CIA in the last years of his service and, after retiring, he sold them some of his information," he said. "This person," he added, "believed that after retiring, and ceasing to be service personnel, he could easily communicate, travel abroad and contact intelligence services. But he was monitored and discovered acting, " he said.

The Iranian judiciary, which stresses that "the security of society in this country is our red line," had not publicly ruled on this case before. In recent weeks, after a series of murky explosions in places like petrochemicals, a nuclear centrifuge production plant, and a missile production center, they have led to the belief that rival countries in Iran are trying to sabotage their industry , including that for civil purposes.

At the same press conference, Gholamhossein Esmaili referred to the case of Mahmoud Mousavi-Majd , another Iranian accused of spying for the secret services of Israel and the United States. He had been behind bars for over a year when the United States, in a move branded "illegal" by a UN rapporteur, assassinated General Qassem Soleimani on January 3 last. Mousavi-Majd is accused of having provided the CIA and Mossad with information on Soleimani's whereabouts.

Gholamhossein Esmaili, although he had announced the early execution of this second individual in early June, this Tuesday has confirmed that it has not yet been carried out. "Would it be possible for us to act with indifference towards someone who sells the country's secrets to a foreigner, to an enemy? Of course, the sentence has not yet been carried out, but it is in process," the spokesman sentenced Mizan.

Last February, Iran announced another death sentence, in this case for a national, Amir Rahimpour , who had been accused of providing information about the Iranian nuclear program to the CIA. The local press has not reported on him again. Just Tuesday, the nuclear pact, which was to allow Iran to develop a peaceful nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, is five years in a worse state than ever due to the withdrawal of the United States and the reimposition of sanctions.

Iran is one of the countries with the most extensive capital punishment, even for minors , since it takes into account its maturity under Islamic law. Recently, the Supreme Court upheld death sentences for three young people who joined the fuel price protests last November, which resulted in serious riots and the deaths of 230 people, according to official sources. Most of the dead were protesters who were shot . The three convicts, who can still request the appeal, are accused of "participating in an armed conflict".
