The 39-year-old journalist Sajid Hussain was granted political asylum in Sweden in 2018. Prior to that, he had reported for the news site Balochistan Times on corruption and human rights in Pakistan.

Since January he was enrolled at Uppsala University, where he also worked as a teacher. Two months later, he disappeared without a trace and was reported missing and a preliminary investigation was initiated.

Murder investigation is closed

At the end of April, he was found dead at Ulva mill north of Uppsala and the investigation - led by prosecutor Ulrika Lindsö at the National Unit against International and Organized Crime - was reclassified as murder.

The prosecutor is now closing the preliminary investigation.

In an email to SVT Nyheter Uppsala, Ulrika Lindsö writes that investigative measures - such as forensic autopsies and interrogation of witnesses with people who had been with Sajid Hussain shortly before the disappearance - have weakened the suspicion of crime.

"In summary, there is now no reason to assume that crimes under public prosecution have been committed," the prosecutor writes.
