No binoculars were needed overnight. The comet clearly appeared over the neighbor's chimney.

- It is visible to the naked eye. It is so bright, says Bengt Ask, Lommabo and civil engineer, who heard from SVT News Skåne about his cosmic observation.

The comet Neowise was discovered by NASA's space telescope on March 27 earlier this year and was named after the telescope that discovered it.

Whimsical iced stones

Although clearly visible, it is very far away.

"It is not close at all, it is almost as far away as the sun," says Bengt Ask, who has had an interest in astronomy and comets since he was twelve. 23 years ago, he also observed the comet Hale – Bopp.

He says that comets are often described as space's dirty snowballs with stone in them.

According to him, they are notoriously unpredictable and sometimes they break when they pass the sun. But Neowise has managed the journey past the sun.

Find a gap in the clouds

- However, the comet will decrease in brightness and in a few days it will be best seen at dusk. We will probably be able to see it with the naked eye for a few more weeks, says Bengt Ask.

However, cloudiness makes it difficult for all comet viewers. It is important that a cloud develop in the clouds or that the weather becomes clear in the next few days.

- For each day it will appear higher up in the sky at the same time as it drops in brightness. It can be seen roughly to the north. In the evening after dusk one should look north to the northwest. After midnight to the northeast, he says.

Next time in several thousand years

According to the journal Scientific American, Neowise is a periodic comet that will return only in 6,800 years.

So for those who are interested, it is now or never to go out in the summer night and look for the rare comet.

- This particular comet, we who live now, will only be able to see this summer, says Lommabon Bengt Ask.
