20 November 2018 For more than half of the world's children, the opportunity to live the childhood they deserve and to which they simply have the right continues to be only a distant mirage and every day, on their skin, they have to deal with the disastrous consequences of conflicts, poverty or discrimination, Save the Children denounces on the occasion of the World Day of the Rights of the Child and Adolescents.

'' In the world many, too many children continue to die every day because they have no food, water or medical care. And there are many who cannot go to school because they live in war zones or because they are forced to go to work, just as millions of girls and boys become adults too early because they are forced to marry men often older than themselves. The world cannot and must no longer accept that all this continues to happen. Children are first of all children and each of them deserves the opportunity to be born and grow up healthy, to receive an education and to feel protected, '' said Valerio Neri, general manager of Save the Children.

About 5.4 million children die each year from easily treatable diseases
According to the Organization, approximately 5.4 million children die each year before reaching the fifth year of age due to easily treatable diseases and preventable, of which almost half lose their lives from causes related to malnutrition

Living conditions of minors particularly serious in fragile or conflict-affected areas
Living conditions of minors are particularly serious in fragile or conflict-affected areas, where they currently live 350 million children in their daily lives often face huge obstacles regarding access to food, clean water or medical treatment. In Yemen alone, more than three and a half years after the escalation of the violence, more than 5 million children are suffering from food shortages, 1 out of 2 children in the country suffers from chronic malnutrition and more than 400,000 under the age of 5 have severe acute malnutrition. Similarly, in Syria, more than 13 million people still need humanitarian assistance and nearly 2,400 children under the age of 5 are likely to die by the end of the year from causes related to malnutrition.

27 million children and young people are currently cut out of education
. Access to education, in areas waged by war and violence, is also seriously endangered, considering that as many as 27 million children and young people are currently cut out of education. education, because their schools have been destroyed, damaged or occupied or because their parents find it too dangerous for them to leave home to go to school. In many cases, in these contexts, children and young people irremediably lose their childhood also because they are forced to work to support their families: children living in conflict areas are in fact 77% more likely to be involved in child labor than to the global average.

In developing countries, in particular, 1 out of 5 children are in extreme poverty.
The rights of children around the world, says Save the Children, are seriously threatened even in areas affected by poverty where more than 1 billion children live. In developing countries, in particular, 1 in 5 children is in extreme poverty, but even in the most economically advanced areas, children are forced to deal with economic deprivations, with around 30 million children and young people in relative poverty. serious in OECD countries. A plague, moreover, that does not leave even Italy immune, where 1.2 million children and adolescents live in conditions of absolute poverty with serious repercussions on their future.

Of the children cut out of school around the world, almost 9 out of 10 - still highlights the Organization - live in low- or medium-low income countries, and in the poorest countries 1 out of 3 children do not go to school, against the least 4 out of 100 in the richest contexts. Similarly, in the least developed countries, 1 out of 4 children are forced to work, a denial of rights that also affects 2 million children and adolescents in high-income countries.

575 million girls and boys subject to gender discrimination
Violations of children's rights which, moreover, continue to affect many, too many girls and girls around the world, victims of daily discrimination that prevent them from building a future. In fact, over 575 million girls and boys who live in contexts characterized by serious gender discrimination; 12 million child brides every year and 7.8 million adolescents who become mothers early, with serious risks for their health and that of their children.

Save the Children works every day, in Italy and in the world, to guarantee a future for children without a future, the most excluded, invisible or forgotten, thanks to its projects in the areas of education, health, nutrition, protection, fight against poverty , food security, rights and participation. Worldwide, the Organization works both in development contexts and in areas affected by crises and emergencies, which have a particularly negative impact especially on children, and only in 2017 it managed to reach 33 million children with its health programs and nutrition.
