In Germany, a large police force was deployed on Monday, for the second consecutive day, to find a fugitive in lattice, hidden in the Black Forest and armed to the teeth.

"Stay at home and don't take a hitchhiker with you," warned local police in Oppenau, in the southwest of the country, where the incident began on Sunday morning. Authorities released a photo of the fugitive, a homeless man with a bow, arrows, knife, and one or more firearms.

Police officers defeated

Yves Rausch, 31, appears there shaved head and small goatee. Another snapshot published by the daily Bild shows him in uniform of a member of the military special forces, dressed from head to toe in a trellis and military equipment, like riflescopes attached to his helmet. He is known to the police for various crimes of illegal carrying of arms and conflicts with the police.

Alerted by a witness, a patrol tried to apprehend him Sunday in a makeshift shelter where he had been seen. The suspect was initially cooperative, said the police, before, "suddenly and completely unexpectedly", draw a weapon and defeat the police. He "threatened the officers who did not have time to react", described the police, stressing that the man had "probably" fled with four service weapons.

Closed kindergartens

The fugitive then fled to the Black Forest, where he has since been sought by a hundred agents, including special forces, supported by helicopters. The police also use thermal cameras and dogs, so far without success. Investigators believe the fugitive is on foot, but the search perimeter, a dense forest, offers many potential hiding places.

“Anyone who meets the suspect should stay away. The man is in a state of mental distress ”, warned the spokesman of the police of Oppenau, in Baden-Württemberg. The town's kindergartens and open-air swimming pool have been closed as a precaution by the municipality of Oppenau, who spoke of a "dangerous situation". Forest walks and outdoor activities are also prohibited.

"He has always had odd jobs - sometimes as a caretaker on a golf course, or at the station," said a former neighbor to the popular daily Bild. "Another year ago, he lived in an apartment above an inn before he was evicted because he didn't pay his rent," he said. "Weapons, ammunition and cans of petrol were allegedly discovered in the apartment at that time," added this witness, adding that there was "even a small shooting range in the attic". Yves Rausch then lived in his car, before settling down in a hut at the edge of the forest where the police tried to arrest him.
