The wife of John Travolta , Kelly Preston , died of breast cancer at age 57, according to the actor confirmed in a post on his Instagram account.

"Heartbroken I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle against breast cancer. She fought in a brave fight with the love and support of many, " the actor published this morning.

The actress and former model and Travolta had been married for 29 years and both practiced Scientology. They have two children, Ella, 20, and Benjamin, nine, and a son, Jett, died in 2009 at age 16.

"Kelly's love and life will always be remembered. I will take time to be with my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you have not heard from us for a while," Travolta adds in his message.

Preston was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, before studying at the University of Southern California. She became engaged to Travolta in 1991 in Gstaad, Switzerland. The couple married in September of that year.

Preston had kept his fight against breast cancer that he suffered from private with "the support of his family and closest friends," said the family representative.

"She was a bright, beautiful, and loving soul who cared deeply for others and brought everything she touched to life. Her family asks her to understand her need for privacy at this time, " he added.

In addition to Jerry Maguire in 1996, Preston's films also include SpaceCamp in 1986, Twins in 1988, Jack Frost in 1998, For Love of the Game in 1999, and View From the Top in 2003 and The Cat in the Hat .
