The number of confirmed cases of the emerging coronavirus around the world has exceeded 13 million, as infection continues to spread at an accelerated pace, despite the announcement by several countries that they are over the peak stage.

According to the WorldMeter statistical platform - which tracks the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic caused by the Coruna virus - more than 13 million and 40,000 cases have been detected since the virus appeared in China late last year.

According to the same source, the number of deaths exceeded 570,000, while 7.6 million people recovered.

For its part, the World Health Organization said it had recorded the largest daily increase in cases of Coronavirus on Sunday in the world, as 230,370 people were infected in 24 hours.

The largest increases were in the United States, Brazil, India and South Africa, according to the World Health Organization.

And the health authorities in India announced today, Monday, to set a new record in the number of daily infections with the Corona virus, as it detected 28,701 new cases within 24 hours. In many cities, authorities have begun strict closings to contain the infection.

Mexico bypasses Italy

The epidemiological situation continues to worsen in Latin America in particular, where, on Sunday, Mexico became the fourth country in the world in terms of the number of deaths with Covid-19, bypassing Italy. The top three deaths are the United States, Brazil and Britain.

Mexican health authorities said on Twitter that "in Mexico there are 299,750 confirmed cases, 35,6 deaths."

However, left-wing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the epidemic was "losing its power" in the country, and he blamed what he described as "conservative" media for spreading concern.

Risks and possibilities in America

In the United States, the infection continues at a rapid rate, especially in the major states of the south of the country. Brett Geroyer, assistant secretary of health, said yesterday, in a statement to a television network, that it is not possible to exclude the re-imposition of a stone in the most affected areas.

The US official added that "all possibilities should be put on the table", expressing "everyone's concern" about these developments.

On Sunday, the United States recorded 59,747 new cases of Covid-19 within 24 hours, according to the Johns Hopkins University daily report monitoring the epidemic.

The total deaths reached about 135,000 out of more than 3.2 million confirmed cases in the country.

The issue of reopening schools, the decision of which is within the jurisdiction of local authorities, has been the subject of political debate, four months before the presidential election in which President Donald Trump faces his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, former Vice President.

"I urge all schools to resume their activities and offer lessons to their students full-time," Education Minister Betsy Davos told CNN, reiterating the president's call.

For her part, Speaker of the Democratic House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi commented on these calls, saying, "They are playing with the health of our children." "We all want our children to return to school ... but they must return safely," she added.

Setbacks in Europe and Africa

In Spain, for the first time since the end of the general quarantine, the authorities on Sunday re-imposed a home quarantine on more than 200,000 people in the Catalonia region (Northeast) with the aim of stemming the high rise in the number of injuries.

The area in question is located in the vicinity of the city of Lleida, 100 km from the tourist beaches in Catalonia.

"The population should stay in their homes," starting at midnight local time, regional health official Alba Fergus told a news conference.

In South Africa, President Cyril Ramavusa decided on Sunday to reimpose a curfew to cope with the high number of cases of the Coronavirus.

Ramavusa noted that 12,000 injuries were recorded every day in recent weeks.

He also announced the re-imposition of the curfew from Monday from nine in the evening to four in the morning local time, and prohibited family visits, as well as decided to suspend the sale or distribution of alcohol.

"As we head towards the peak of infections, it is imperative that we not make our clinics and hospitals overcrowded with people suffering from alcohol-related injuries," the president said in a televised speech.
