  • Scrutiny: Elections in Galicia

Whatever happened in the Galician and Basque elections, the PP's focus was going to be on Pablo Casado. But, seen the final results, with more reason than expected. The overwhelming success of Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the poor result of Carlos Iturgaiz have a considerable impact on the debate on the direction of the party, which will be revived starting this Monday. In the first place, because Iturgaiz, leader of the PP-Cs coalition, was a personal bet by the opposition leader, and his return to the Basque political arena has not finished working. And, secondly, due to its contrast with the moderate discourse of the PP of Galicia , which has proven effective once again, with the fourth absolute majority of Feijóo, who equals Fraga .

Not only that, but the PP-Cs coalition has failed to stop Vox's entry into Parliament , by Álava . Right in the fiefdom of the previous PP candidate, Alfonso Alonso, who resigned to represent the coalition for his disagreements with Genoa . But Iturgaiz's great defeat is not to achieve -with 99.8% counted- only five seats (four less than the nine that the Basque PP had alone), but rather his speech, closer to Aznarism and which has included winks The Vox voter has given wings to those of Santiago Abascal.

This is recognized by a Basque popular leader : «If you speak to the Vox voter to tell them that their policies can be done, they will vote for Vox. It is a mistake not to have gone just in the opposite direction: to the voter fled to the PNV ». This flight of votes towards the nationalists has been a butron that neither Iturgaiz nor Genoa have been able to block. The national leadership has turned to the Basque campaign, focusing in recent days the messages against the PNV, for its approach to the PSOE in Madrid and for an alleged veiled background of independence.

But if in 2016 PP and Cs added 128,000 votes, now they have remained at 60,000. Less than half. In Genoa they hoped to get six deputies, but they believe that the five achieved are not a setback: "We have contained the fall." But it is also true that the seat won by Vox has held back the expectations of the coalition. In other words, Iturgaiz has not been able to overcome the bad result that the polls in January predicted for the PP, shortly before Alonso - related to Feijóo - left. And Vox sprinkles salt on that wound, winning a new stage for his specialty in the Parliament of Vitoria : attracting focus.

The main blow is Álava , a traditional fishing ground for the popular ones . There, a coalition with Inés Arrimadas has only managed three parliamentarians, two fewer than four years ago. In Genoa, in any case, they do not blame Iturgaiz and are happy with the campaign he has deployed, because it was more about maintaining than adding. «We are already looking more at the reconstruction of the Basque PP. The campaign has been done well, without fail, "they highlighted in Genoa.

The Galician result is more important for the PP, due to the enormous political wealth it maintains for the main opposition party, but it cannot be interpreted in a national way as much as that of the Basque Country. But quite the opposite: the success is of Feijóo, who revalidates his vitola of hegemonic and unbeaten regional leader. With its 42 deputies, one more than four years ago, he established himself as baron of barons and leader of the current management of the party, with Marianist encouragement.

Feijóo's victory is undoubtedly an asset for the popular ones , and in particular for Casado. Why? For the simple reason that he would have been blamed for the loss of the absolute majority. But that asset carries a counterpart: the everlasting debate on the direction of the party will be expanded.

If there is a regional leader who has set a clear profile of his own to get away from the tone -and some postulates- of Genoa, that is Feijóo, who has swept looking at the center and obtaining many of the votes that in the November generals went to the PSOE . And, at the same time, neutralizing Vox and Cs. In other words, consolidating itself as the useful vote par excellence, with a very personal campaign and in which the initials of the PP were reduced to the minimum expression.

This Galician victory is undoubtedly the best news for the PP in a long, long time. But it reopens the debate about Casado's leadership approach. In the moderate, centrist and pactist wing of the party, they proclaim, with relief, that the elections are won by widening the electorate, and not looking at Vox in the rearview mirror.

There will be a "storm surge," they predict.
