“Use extreme caution in the People's Republic of China (PRC) in connection with the arbitrary application of local laws for purposes other than maintaining the rule of law. This unwarranted coercion may include the detention and use of travel bans, ”the State Department said.

According to the State Department, US citizens can be detained in China without explanation, they will not be granted access to US consular services.

On June 26, the United States announced that visa sanctions were being imposed against a number of Chinese representatives for their actions against Hong Kong. 

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also announced that the US would impose sanctions on Chinese officials responsible for "restricting foreigners' access to Tibet."

In addition, the United States imposed sanctions against the public security department of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of China for "human rights violations." 

China has promised retaliation for US sanctions.
