The ceremony was held at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery near Srebrenica. Due to the corona center, the event had to be scaled down and a large part of the ceremony took place digitally.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson were some participants who spoke via video link. Former US President Bill Clinton also attended and the speeches were made on an ongoing basis as if it were a physical ceremony.

- This can never happen again. Recognizing the suffering of the victims and their families is essential to moving forward, Stefan Löfven (S) said in his memoir.

He also highlighted that Sweden received 60,000 refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina during the civil war and that they brought with them memories and experiences that are now part of our shared history.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen also participated in the ceremony.

"After a quarter of a century, Srebrenica is still an open wound in Europe's conscience," she said.
