• Brazil: Bolsonaro's new Minister of Education resigns after five days for falsifying the curriculum
  • Abraham Weintraub.Bolsonaro loosens ballast and gets rid of his controversial Minister of Education

The new Minister of Education of Brazil will be an evangelical pastor, as announced by President Jai Bolsonaro this Friday. Milton Ribeiro , pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will end more than 20 days with the vacancy, after numerous internal ups and downs.

The new minister, graduated in Law and Theology, was rector of the Mackenzie Presbyterian University and has a doctorate in Education from the University of São Paulo , for which he combines the conservative religious profile with the technical criteria that Bolsonaro demanded from the Government to avoid more controversial.

In May 2019, Bolsonaro had already named Ribeiro a member of the ethics commission of the Presidency of the Republic , an advisory body that must monitor the attitude of ministers and government officials. His arrival in the ministry comes after very turbulent weeks.

First came the controversial minister Abraham Weintraub's departure , after continuous controversies, ranging from provocations to the public university and racist comments against China to threats to the judges of the Federal Supreme Court, for which he was being investigated. In the end, Bolsonaro agreed with him on a discreet exit and appointed him to a position as director of the World Bank in the United States .

As a substitute, Bolsonaro named Carlos Decotelli, who was greeted with relief by a more technical profile. Soon false information came to light on his academic resume , and although at first the president defended him, in the end he resigned. He did not even take possession, it lasted five days.

The new Minister of Education will be the fourth in the year and a half that Bolsonaro has been in government (the first was Ricardo Vélez , who lasted just three months). The instability is largely due to internal disputes over controlling a key portfolio in Bolsonar's culture war.

The military wing of the Government, evangelicals and members of the most radical wing (also known as 'olavistas' for being followers of the far-right guru Olavo de Carvalho ) have been fighting behind the scenes to place one of their own.

Finally, Bolsonaro seems to have opted for a consensus name but one that seeks above all to please his most faithful and conservative electorate, since the management of the coronavirus pandemic and the numerous family scandals have undermined its popularity among its more moderate voters.
