The Russian Orthodox Church condemned the decision of Turkey on the status of Hagia Sophia

This was reported by TASS with reference to the chairman of the Synodal Department for the Relations of the Church with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate Vladimir Legoydu.

“It is unfortunate that the concerns of the Russian Orthodox Church and other Orthodox churches were not heard,” he said.

Legoyda added that on July 6, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill noted in his statement that "this decision, alas, is not aimed at reconciling the existing contradictions, but, on the contrary, can lead to even greater divisions."

Earlier, the Turkish State Council annulled the decision of 1934 on turning the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul into a museum. This decision will allow the Turkish authorities to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque.
