For weeks, Donald Trump has assured that the increase in Covid-19 cases is due to an increase in screenings. But Thursday, the United States recorded a new daily record with 65,500 additional infections ... despite tests down slightly since early July. And while hospitalizations started to rise again in mid-June, the deaths seem to logically follow with an additional 1,000 deaths this Thursday. A level twice higher than that of the end of June and that we had not seen for a month. "We are in a very difficult situation," said infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci, who advises the White House on the Covid-19 crisis, on Thursday.

The total number of cases registered in the country since the start of the pandemic is now more than 3.11 million. The previous record dated Tuesday, with more than 60,200 new cases in one day. In total, the coronavirus claimed 133,000 lives in the United States, and the toll could climb to 150,000 by the end of the month.

Record deaths in California, Texas and Florida

Almost half of the new deaths have been recorded in three states - California, Texas and Florida - which are at their highest levels in the entire pandemic. With the exception of California, the explosion of new cases is mainly observed in the States which reopened first. In particular, infections increased 13-fold in ten weeks in Florida and 10-fold in South Carolina. Arizona and Texas are also in bad shape.

The reopening of the country took place by "skipping all the recommended steps", criticized Anthony Fauci during a teleconference organized by the media The Hill. “It is not the right way to do it. We need to rethink this and do it differently. "I think that the states must pause their deconfinement process," he said, while nuancing: "I do not think we have to return to a complete closure. "

Donald Trump plays down these daily records. "For the hundredth time, the reason why we have so many cases, compared to other countries that do not do better than us by far, is that we test much more and better," he said on Twitter Thursday. His tweet is already out of date.
