Puerta del Sol will be fully pedestrian this summer. As of August 20 , the almost 7,000 daily trips that occur by vehicle through Puerta del Sol will be reduced to zero thanks to the pedestrianization of the main streets in the city center , as EL MUNDO has learned . Thus, the project that the city mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, announced in its day, is provisionally advanced.

In total 5,546 square meters will be pedestrianized, including:

  • The main street Mayor as it passes through Puerta el Sol
  • Alcalá street between Seville and Sol
  • The Carrera de San Jerónimo between Plaza de Canalejas and kilometer zero
  • Espoz y Mina street between De la Cruz and Carrera de San Jerónimo
  • Calle de la Victoria between De la Cruz and Carrera de San Jerónimo

On the other hand, the Esparteros street will undergo a change of direction and three EMT lines will be affected : line 3, in the San Amaro direction, and night lines N16, in the Cibeles direction, and N26, in the Alonso Martínez direction. .

According to municipal sources, both the relocation of the stops and the way in which this pedestrianization will be carried out will be communicated to the affected residents and merchants in the coming days . In addition, specific vertical and road signs will be installed . " Fences will not be placed to allow loading and unloading in the area, but there will be controls by agents of the authority to prevent access by vehicles," sources at the Consistory have indicated.

The vehicles may only travel on alternative areas . The access Main Street will be via Calle Esparteros, Marquis Widower of Pontejos, Peace Street, Street Stock Exchange, Plaza Jacinto Benavente, rue de la Cruz and Plaza de Canalejas. While along Calle Atocha, cars can be accessed through the Plaza Mayor / Bailén Tunnel, Plaza Comandante las Moreras and Calle Mayor, which will continue with the same itinerary as before.

The works included in this urban design will begin next year .
