Extremadura follows in the footsteps of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands . The Minister of Health of Extremadura, José María Vergeles , announced this morning the use of the mask starting at 00:00 tonight for people over six years of age, even though the established safety distance is set at 1.5 meters . The resolution of the Board orders the compulsory use on public roads, outdoor spaces and in any closed place for public use, imposing sanctions for non-compliance from 100 to 6,000 euros, as also specified by the second vice president of Extremadura.

And Cantabria, Asturias and Aragón , as their regional presidents have announced, could be the next to apply the same measure in their territories, which will have the practice of sports or certain environments such as beaches or swimming pools, but which in almost all cases will govern on the terraces of the bars, where customers can only remove the mask when eating or drinking.

Currently, Extremadura maintains four active outbreaks, three in the Badajoz Health Area (with seven, five and 14 positives, respectively) and one in Navalmoral de la Mata (Badajoz), with 9 PCR positives. Outbreaks 2 and 3 of Badajoz are the ones that cause the most concern, according to Vergeles, because they have transmitted positives to other Health Areas. In total, in the last two weeks, since the end of the state of alarm, in Extremadura 170 cases have been detected, of which 66 are still positive, with Badajoz leading the way with 45 people affected. Vergeles has not ruled out that in the next few hours a new outbreak will be announced in the Autonomous Community, pending the collection of all the data in the last hours by the health authorities. At this time, no Extremadura coronavirus patient is admitted to the ICU , although two are hospitalized, specifically in Badajoz and Navalmoral de la Mata.

The director of the Extremadura Health Service, Ceciliano Franco , had declared in the last hours that Extremadura was not considering the confinement of any health area, not even that of Badajoz, by Covid-19.

"Act with force and foresight"

In his urgent appearance before the media, the person in charge of Health in Extremadura has justified this decision due to the need to "act forcefully and with foresight" because Covid-19 "is still with us", and more so now that they are coming " on summer weekends where people go out more. " In any case, Vergeles has specified that the situation of the community is "still good", but with the use of the obligatory mask it is intended - although he has recognized that its use "will cause some discomfort" - not to return "to rescaling phases ". In this sense, he indicated that "the relaxation of a few may be the cause of concern for many and that they make us return to previous situations." In this way, it has specified that several of the contagions that are being detected in the region are linked to parties, meetings and leisure situations in which security measures have not been respected "and this, he has asserted," is something that we can afford. "

In the early morning, the Chairman of the Board, Guillermo Fernández Vara, had already declared that "each of us is responsible for the health of his mother and father, of his children, family, neighbors, friends. This is not it's a joke, it's probably the most serious thing we've ever had in our lives. " Thus, he warned that "people who do not comply with the norms that we have given ourselves must be charged with social reproach," he said, referring to prevention measures because "it is no longer worth looking up." And he specified: "There are no more Simones , ministers or advisers. It is a problem for each one of us."

The State Security Forces and Bodies will be in charge of controlling the mandatory use of the mask, said the Extremaduran counselor, who has clarified that there are some exceptions established, such as people with certain diseases, those with respiratory problems or runners , although it will be mandatory to walk. The use of masks will also be mandatory in parks, swimming pools, work centers, terraces and in large bottles, although for example the Badajoz City Council has already banned them in their city. In recent days, in this capital, a full shift of firefighters (14 professionals) have been in isolation after detecting a positive among one of them who, being on paternity leave, tested positive and unknowingly went to visit them. All of them have also been negative in the second PCR test that has been performed. The National Police has also had 17 officers - who are on duty at the Badajoz prison - in quarantine after giving two of them positive results. For the Local Police councilor , María José Solana , the outbreaks in the city are not controlled and there are also uncivil behavior by some citizens, who do not put on the mask. During the state of alarm, the Badajoz Local Police filed 2,638 complaints.

Precisely, it was the Badajoz municipal government that yesterday, after learning of the six new positives in this city, proposed to the Extremadura Board that it decree the use of the mandatory mask, using the Extremadura Health Law to impose it. It was then that the Minister of Health transferred the measure in the afternoon to the Inter-territorial Council of the National Health System . Specifically, José María Vergeles requested that the National Public Health Commission study the imposition of protection throughout the national territory, regardless of the safety distance.

Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, the first

The mandatory use of masks came into force on May 21, after a long debate preceded by conflicting opinions from different experts. The Government ended up taking to the Official State Gazette (BOE) a growing demand that imposed its use from the age of six on the street, in outdoor spaces and in any closed place for public use when the distance from security, finally fixed at 1.5 meters.

That distance, which many considered the best mask, is no longer a limit in Catalonia, the first community to apply its permanent obligation since Thursday under a fine of 100 euros with the aim of stopping infections.

Catalonia will be followed by the Balearic Islands, which has announced the entry into force of this measure as of Monday amid fears unleashed on the islands by the proliferation of massive illegal parties without any security regulations as the police could verify in various actions carried out carried out last weekend, reports Efe.
