The investigation obtained from archival sources that there are at least 15 places in Volgograd and the Volgograd Region with burials of about 1800 civilians of Stalingrad, whom the Nazis executed with extreme cruelty during the Great Patriotic War.

“The purpose of the investigation is to identify specific individuals from among the Nazi invaders and their accomplices involved in the killings of civilians who managed to escape responsibility for their atrocities,” the UK said.

Within the framework of the case, a set of examinations will be appointed to identify the personalities of the victims. Preparatory work is currently underway for excavations in 15 burial sites. Excavations will also involve the military, the Ministry of Emergencies and search squads.

“The arsenal of the latest forensic technology will be involved in the investigation,” the department added.
