If the coronavirus pandemic tends to ebb in Europe, cases of contamination explode in the south and west of the United States. The country has just crossed the threshold of three million contaminations, thus suspending the process of deconfinement in certain cities. Bad news for President Donald Trump, who is bidding for a re-election to be re-elected to the White House in November. "Its rating continues to crumble due to the economic situation," explains Europe 1 Pascal Boniface, founding director of IRIS (Institute of International and Strategic Relations).

The management of the epidemic by the President of the United States has been regularly criticized. "Everything that should not be done, he did," added the specialist, author of the book  Geopolitics of Covid-19. "He is constantly lying, in the United States the lie is punished normally". DonaldTrump recently scanned the possibility of a return of the virus, explaining the spike in contamination case numbers by an increase in testing capacity in June. A hypothesis denied by scientists. He also promised a "superb third quarter" for the US economy, when the threat of the Covid-19.

"Divider of the nation"

More broadly, the politics of Donald Trump divides, including in his own political camp. Recently, his former Defense Secretary James Mattis, or his current Chief of the Defense Staff, Mark Milley deplored the President's desire to send the army to suppress anti-racist demonstrations. "He wanted to instrumentalize the army for the benefit of his political agenda, and that the soldiers do not like very much", explains Pascal Boniface.

Several conservatives criticized him as someone "not responsible enough" and "divider of the nation". However, the presidential race is still long for the former American businessman, who has a solid base. "This man has resources, he is a great politician in terms of the electoral campaign. He may very well bounce back. It would be too early to say that he is already beaten."
